What Is The Difference Between A Podiatrist And A Chiropodist?

Both Podiatrists and Chiropodists deal with the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the lower limb. They are qualified to treat people with arthritis, diabetes, nail surgery and sports injuries. They also carry out biomechanical assessments and prescribe orthotics. They work with people of all ages, but play an important role in helping older people to stay mobile and independent.

In Australia the term ‘’Chiropodist’’ has been retired since 1977 and replaced with “Podiatrist”. Prior to this, Chiropodists were an unregulated profession and when decision was made to register all approved practitioners, the term was then changed to avoid any confusion.

However, in other countries such has the UK the term chiropody is still used today. There is no difference today between podiatrists and chiropodists. In the UK, chiropody in the 60s and 70s was mainly a cut and come again service and was unregulated, but this has changed over time, with people living longer and diabetes on the increase. You can only refer to yourself as a podiatrist/chiropodist if you are fully qualified and have a BSc Podiatry degree. Over time the podiatry profession has become more evolved and specialised.

In America, podiatrists are trained in all aspects. They have to study medicine first before specialising in podiatry, which allows them to carry out foot surgery. If a podiatrist in Australia or the UK wishes to become a podiatric surgeon, they have to study a master’s degree and will have a lengthy training period working alongside a fully qualified podiatric surgeon which can take around 7-10 years.

A podiatry degree takes 3-4 years depending on where you study. This involves clinical placements and classroom study including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and lots, lots more.
