Orthotics – Why They Only Fit In Certain Shoes?

custom-orthoticOrthotics are prescribed to control foot function and alter forces to manage symptoms. They require a suitable shoe to be placed in and if you are wearing shoes that are counterproductive, you will not get the results you are hoping for.

So what do you need to look for in a shoe?

An ideal shoe would be one with a deep toe box, a fastening and a removable insert to allow the orthotic to be accommodated within the shoe. We know that this isn’t a choice of shoe for everyone, however if you try to put an orthotic in a shoe that isn’t suitable, this can cause discomfort. It can lead to irritation of the toes if they are forced up within the shoe and you may not actually be able to get your feet in the shoes with the orthotics. This can sometimes lead to calluses, corns or blisters.

A shoe with a removable innersole makes it easier to fit your orthotics. If there is too much bulk in the shoe this can cause the heel to slip when you walk or your shoes may feel too tight for you.

It is important to choose a shoe with a good fastening such as laces, buckle or Velcro. Slip on shoes will not give you the support that you need.

When choosing shoes make sure that they are not be able to flex them at the arch, generally if you can bend your shoe in half, it is not a good shoe for you.

Another point to be aware of is that if you place an orthotic in an excessively worn shoe it will counteract the effect of the orthotics. If your shoes are heavily worn particularly at the heel it can lead to your orthotics over correcting your foot which may lead to problems.

Remember that everyone is different, and it’s a good idea to consult with your podiatrist for further advice if you are unsure about a certain pair of shoes.
