Dry Needling

dry needling2Do you ever feel like you have a tightness in your muscles or a ‘knot’ that can be quite painful and just won’t go away? We may have the answer for you. Our podiatrists were very busy on the weekend attending a course and learning new skills on dry needling.

What is dry needling?

Dry needling is when acupuncture needles are inserted into a tight band of muscle which relieves pain. Muscles have trigger points, which is a tender spot in a tight band of muscle which often feels like a ‘knot’. When you squeeze or press on this area it causes pain or discomfort. These trigger points are irritable and hypersensitive areas in muscles, tendons or connective tissue. This irritation can cause the affected area to shorten, tighten, spasm and then become weakened.

What can it help with?

Dry needling can be used to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions including the following:dry needling1

– Muscle tightness or ‘pulled muscle’ in your legs and feet.

– Heel pain, ankle pain, leg pain and knee pain.

– Achilles pain.

– Neuromas.

– Shin splints.

– Reduced ranges of motion, especially for our athletes as it helps increase range of motion and improve function!

Is it painful?dry needling3

For most people there is little to no discomfort with the insertion of the needle. Once the needle hits the trigger point, you will experience a “twitch response” which often feels like a quick muscle cramp. Once the muscle is relieved of this trigger point there is normally immediate relief of your pain or the tight ‘knot’ feeling.

Ask your podiatrist at your next consult about dry needling to see if you are a suitable candidate or give us a call to make an appointment. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
