What Is A Podiatric General Treatment?

general treatment 2Podiatry is a growing industry and there are still a lot of people who don’t really know what it is we do. It is difficult to summarise our scope of practise in a few words, we specialise in the treatment of foot and ankle problems including sprains and fractures, bunions, general foot pain, ingrown toenails, warts, corns callus and more. Today I am going to explain to you one of our common treatments which we refer to as a ‘general treatment’.

A general treatment will vary slightly from person to person but this is a rough idea of what is involved:

  • If you are a new patient we will take a general medical and social history and discuss any problems you may be experiencing with your feet or legs
  • Again, for new patients, we will do a basic neurological and vascular assessment and go through the results with you
  • We will then begin the treatment which includes cutting and filing your toenails, removing any dry/hard skin (callus) and corns that may be present. We then smooth out the skin with a special file and apply foot cream
  • During this appointment we will also work on any issues you may have such as ingrown toenails, cracked heels or fungal nails
  • We will give you any relevant treatment advice and educate you on keeping your feet in the best possible condition

We use modern equipment and sterile instruments as your health and safety is our main priority. The appointment usually lasts around half an hour and we recommend people return every 6-10 weeks for regular general treatments. Having these treatments regularly is important to maintain good foot health, prevent future problems and address any concerns you may have.

If your eye sight has deteriorated or you can’t reach your feet as well as you used to than regular general treatments would be perfect for you, however, we provide general treatments to people of all ages and health status’.

If you have private health insurance you may be eligible for a rebate on these appointments and if you have any chronic medical conditions have a chat to your doctor about whether you are eligible for an Enhanced Primary Care Plan which entitles you a Medicare rebate.
