It’s That Time Of Year Again, Time For New School Shoes

school-shoes

Another start to the year typically means buying new school shoes for the kids. Spending top dollar for shoes doesn’t always mean top quality or the correct pair for your kid’s feet. Poorly fitting or unsupportive shoes can be problematic for short and long term; hammer toes, ingrown toenails, corns and callouses to just name a few.

There are however a few tips and features to look out for when purchasing new shoes:

  • A Strong rubber sole will provide shock absorption and protection
  • Leather allows breathability and durability
  • Firm heel counter supports the heel
  • Flexibility at the forefoot allowing flexibility to run and jump
  • A removable insole would be beneficial if orthotics are needed
  • Lace up are recommended
  • There should be a thumbs width between the end of your longest toe and the end of the shoe
  • Toe box should be roomy – not tight

NO NO’s

  • Shoes that bend in half at the midsole – A strong and stable midsole supports the arch while also reducing fatigue
  • Buying shoes in a bigger size expecting your child to grow into them. This will cause instability and is a major tripping hazard

Reminder: Your feet should never be forced to conform to the shape of a pair of shoes!
