Do I Need Custom Shoes?

I get asked this question a lot. Most people with diabetes do not need custom made shoes. Custom made shoes are necessary only for people with significant deformities that cannot be accommodated by a stock shoe. However, if you are at risk for ulceration or amputation, you may need special, therapeutic shoes – for example, ones with extra depth and inserts.

You are considered at risk if you have already had a toe or partial foot amputation, if you have a foot deformity, if you have ever had an ulcer that is now healed,or if you have diabetes-related foot problems such as poor circulation or nerve damage. A Podiatrist can examine your feet and is the best person to advise you about custom shoes.

We are extremely lucky, in that we have one of the best custom shoe bootmakers in the country, here in the shire. Ron Henson from R&D Footwear is one of the best I have ever come across, and we have worked together on many difficult feet over the last 17 years. So if you think this may solve some of your foot problems, don’t hesitate to come in and see us.

We have HICAPS available in our clinic, which means that our patients can claim from their private health fund straight away
